The Marlin Papoose (or Marlin 70PSS Take Down as it’s also known) is a self-loading .22 Long Rifle takedown-type rifle based on the popular Marlin 60 series. The rifle is similar in conception to other takedown rifles, but notably lighter and more compact than most.

The Model 70 has been offered with wood stocks and the Model 70PSS is a stainless steel version. The synthetic stock version may make the most sense as a survival rifle, but the version tested features the standard aluminum receiver and blue steel barrel.

The term “Papoose” isn’t official, it seems, but it’s the most common moniker for this rifle.

The Papoose is 35 inches long and weighs a scant 3.25 pounds. That is light for a .22 rifle. Many single shot rifles weigh more than the Papoose. The rifle’s stock is large enough to allow use by a full-size adult. This is good, as the rifle doesn’t have a fore end.

MARLIN MODEL 39A

The highly-prized rimfire Marlin 39A .22 tube magazine lever-action debuted in 1891. The world “timeless” is easily bandied about, but this literally was world’s first ever .22 lever-action. It remained in production decades and earned records for longest continuous production by a company that originated a gun. It also held the record for most sold .22 lever-action with over 2,000,000 being delivered to delighted customers. The 39A was a high-quality .22 that could quickly empty its 26 x .22 Short, 21 x .22 Long or 19 x .22 Long Rifle ammo. Other versions included the Marlin Golden 39A and the Golden 39M straight-grip carbine.

MARLIN 1894 DARK

the Marlin 336 Dark. Consider the 336 Dark a modernized version of this .30-30-chambered lever action—still suitable for whitetail deer hunting but now sporting some upgraded features for today’s discerning consumer.

You’ll quickly see where the rifle gets its name. The metal has a matte Parkerized finish, and the hardwood stock has a black, webbed finish painted on. You can have it in any color you want…as long as it’s black.

The barrel on the Dark has been shortened from the original’s 20 inches to 16.25 inches, with a five-round magazine tube. The muzzle has been threaded 5/8x24, so you can attach a suppressor if you’d like.

MARLIN 1895

the Marlin 1895Rifle delivers lever action performance as smooth as you've ever experienced. Made with 6 machined and heat-treated steel forgings for greater strength, the 1895 also features a clean, flat, solid top receiver that keeps out the rain, snow and debris and makes a click here perfect base for mounting a scope.
